How to read this
Two aircraft, two operating envelopes. Turtle Airways flies the de Havilland Twin Otter as a float-equipped seaplane out of its Nadi base on the Wailoaloa beach strip. It can land only on water — protected lagoons, river mouths, sheltered bays. Per-leg pricing is FJD 290 for a Mamanuca hop (Mana, Malolo, Castaway), FJD 380–450 for a Yasawa leg, and FJD 460–540 for the Beqa Lagoon drop. Savusavu and Taveuni seaplane legs are FJD 480–580.
Pacific Island Air (PIA) flies the Airbus/Eurocopter AS350 Squirrel helicopter out of Nadi and Denarau, and can land at hotel helipads, hilltop pads and the Beqa Lagoon Resort helipad. Per-leg pricing is FJD 700–950 for Mamanuca, FJD 900–1100 for Yasawa, FJD 800–950 for Beqa, and FJD 1100–1500 for Savusavu / Taveuni. Six seats; not all seats have a window view.
Why the helicopter costs more. Two engines (more maintenance, more fuel per leg), fewer seats, and the helicopter can land at places the seaplane can't — a hilltop resort like Royal Davui, or a hotel without a marina. The pilot is a senior captain; charter rules require two crew on some routes. The seaplane is single-pilot on most hops.
Multi-island logic. Helicopters are charged per landing, which makes a 3-island Yasawa day-trip FJD 2700–3300 — vs FJD 1100–1400 on the seaplane, which is charged per leg (with engine time, not per landing). Multi-island tours therefore lean heavily seaplane unless the islands require helipad access.
Weight limits. The seaplane caps at 90 kg per person dressed, with strict no-exceptions enforcement past 95 kg dressed. The helicopter caps at 110 kg dressed but the captain reserves the right to refuse passengers above that. Heavy guests should phone both desks in advance.
What this is NOT
- Not a real-time quote. Helicopter charter prices move with fuel surcharges (currently FJD 0.65/L) and the published per-leg rate is a guide only.
- Not a booking tool. Turtle: +679 672 1888 or turtleairways.com. PIA: +679 672 5644. Both take Visa / Mastercard; both levy a FJD 25 phone-book fee.
- Not a guarantee of weather routing. Both operators divert in 2 m+ swells and at the first sign of low cloud. December–April diversions are 10–20%.
- Not a substitute for Fiji Airways turboprop. For most routes, Fiji Airways is 30–60% less expensive; charter is for the lagoon-drop / multi-island convenience.
- Not for unaccompanied minors. Both operators require an adult on board for under-15s.
FAQ
Is the seaplane safe in rough weather?
Twin Otters have a 50-year safety record in the Pacific and are designed for water operations. They divert when sustained winds exceed 25 kt. In the cyclone season (Nov–April) cancellations are common; the operator phones the day before if a diversion looks likely.
Can a helicopter land on the resort's beach instead of the helipad?
Sometimes. The pilot will pick a sheltered patch of beach if there is no formal helipad. Most Yasawa resorts (Nanuya, Paradise Cove) have a helipad. Mamanuca resorts (Likuliku, Malolo) generally have a helipad or beach-landing slot.
Do children count toward weight limits?
Yes. A 6-year-old at 22 kg still contributes to the seat's weight budget. The operators weigh everyone at check-in. Be honest — they have scales.
Can I book a private helicopter for a wedding proposal?
Yes. PIA does Yasawa day-trips for FJD 2700–3300 (3 islands, 90-min flight) and a sunset Sawan-I-Hotel circle for FJD 850. Photography is allowed but no drone — PIA's permit doesn't extend to drone use.
What if I need to cancel?
Turtle: 24 h notice = full refund, weather cancellations = 100% refund or free rebook. PIA: 48 h notice = 90% refund, weather cancellations = 100% refund or free rebook. Less than 24 h: most fares are non-refundable.
