Rainbow Reef site picker

Rainbow Reef runs through the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu — soft-coral walls, current-scoured pinnacles and a tide that swings twice a day. Six named sites, each behaves differently in current. This page matches your profile to the right one.

Operator-level rules
  • Negative entries at slack — descend on the line, never free-fall
  • Tow-backs are mandatory at Great White Wall on incoming
  • Computer-set to 18 m for the wall dives even when AOW
  • Don't dive Rainbow Reef within 24 h of flying (Taveuni flights are tiny planes)
What a perfect Somosomo day looks like
  • Two-tank day: slack morning, incoming afternoon (or vice-versa)
  • Briefing covers current direction, negative entry points, exit points
  • Reef hook provided; backup SMB for drift divers
  • Surface interval on the boat with tea & banana cake — Paradise Cove & Dolphin Bay both do this

How to read the match score

Match score is 0–100. The base starts at 70. Three things pull it down:

Above 70 → great fit, book. 50–70 → ask the operator to confirm same-day. Below 50 → wrong site for you; pick a different one or shift your comfort level.

FAQ

Is Rainbow Reef only for advanced divers?

Three of the six sites are doable on Open Water with a deep-orientation check dive — Cabbage Patch (22 m), parts of Purple Wall (25 m, stay shallow), and the shallower plateau at Nuku. The Zoo and Eddie's Towers need AOW minimum. Great White Wall at full incoming tide needs Deep-Specialty or above.

How long does it take to get to Taveuni?

Fly Nadi → Taveuni (Matei) on Fiji Link or Northern Air, ~75 min. Boat transfer to most resorts is 30–60 min. The strait itself is reached by 20–40 min boat ride from either Taveuni coast or from Vanua Levu's Tunuloa side. Most operators pick you up from your resort.

What's a "reef hook" and do I need one?

A 3-m line with a hook on the end — clip it to dead coral at depth and you can stop in current without finning. Operators lend them; bring your own clip if you can. Yes, you'll want one at Great White Wall on incoming tide. Yes, you'll feel ridiculous. Yes, you'll be grateful.

How much does a Rainbow Reef day cost?

Two-tank day boat, FJD 350–550 per person (Dolphin Bay Divers / Paradise Cove published rates 2024–2026). Includes tanks, weights, guide, reef hook, light snack, tea. Add FJD 80–150 for full gear rental. Nitrox fills +10% on top of air fills. Live-aboard to Rainbow Reef runs FJD 4,500–6,500 for 4 nights.
