Meal plan decider — EP vs HB vs FB vs AI

Resort meal plans look like an upsell until you do the math. AI only pays off when you'll barely leave the property. This page works out the break-even for your nights, your party, and how many outside meals you'll actually eat.

How to read this

Fiji resorts offer four meal plans. EP (European Plan) is room only — you pay for every meal à la carte. HB (Half Board) typically adds FJD 120 per adult per night to the room rate and covers breakfast and dinner. FB (Full Board) adds lunch on top, around FJD 200 per adult per night total. AI (All-Inclusive) bundles meals, snacks and drinks (often with a daily credit rather than unlimited), typically FJD 380 per adult per night total.

The trade-off is straightforward on paper: AI looks expensive, but the cost of à la carte dinners at a Denarau resort is FJD 60–90 per adult, so two dinners per night covers the AI premium. The break-even depends on how many meals you actually eat at the resort versus going out for lunch in Nadi or Suva, or having a light breakfast and a big dinner elsewhere.

AI only pays off when you'll barely leave the property. If you're doing day trips — Cloud 9, Robinson Crusoe, Sigatoka river, Mana Island, Taveuni — you'll eat at least one meal a day off-resort, and AI starts to lose value. The calculator flags this clearly with the "outside meals" input.

Drinks matter a lot. Cocktails at a Denarau resort are FJD 18–25 each. A drinks-heavy guest (3+ cocktails/day) burns FJD 60–80 of à la carte drink value daily. AI includes spirits, cocktails and some wines within the daily allowance; otherwise drinks are still à la carte. The drinks-heavy toggle is the largest single signal in the calculator.

Children's pricing is usually applied as 50% of adult upcharge for ages 5–11 and free for under-5, but varies property to property. The calculator assumes adult-only pricing; subtract roughly 40% from the per-day upcharge for a couple with two kids under 12.

FAQ

Does AI include alcohol?

Most Fiji AI plans include house spirits, house wines, and a daily cocktail credit (FJD 60–100/day). Premium spirits and aged wines are usually à la carte on top. Verify the "what's included" sub-page on the resort website.

What if I'm doing day trips every day?

Drop the plan to HB or FB. You'll be off-property for 1–2 meals a day, and AI premium goes to waste. Day-trip lunches are usually packed by the resort (small fee) or bought at the destination.

Can I switch from FB to AI mid-stay?

Sometimes, but rarely at the same daily rate. Most properties will quote the mid-stay switch at the rack AI rate, not the pre-booked discount. The break-even usually doesn't move enough to make mid-stay switching worth it.

What about kids-stay-free meal plans?

Most Fiji resorts run "kids stay and eat free under 5" or "kids eat free under 12" promos seasonally. These change with school holidays and booking windows. Verify the rate quote — these promos can swing the math by 30–40%.

Are drinks packages worth it on their own?

For a drinks-heavy guest on EP, a daily drinks package (~FJD 80/day) usually beats à la carte (3 × FJD 22 cocktails = FJD 66) only if you also drink bottled water and coffee at the bar. The crossover is around 3 standard drinks / day.
