Manta Month × Site picker

Manta birostris (pelagic giants) and Manta alfredi (resident reef mantas) show up on different Fiji reefs at different months. This page renders a six-site × twelve-month likelihood grid, then recommends the right combination for your target.

Cells show encounter-likelihood band (Low / Med / High / Peak) for each (site, month) pair. Your selected site & month are outlined in gold.

Best operator habits
  • Book 2–3 dives at the same site — manta sightings cluster on the second/third dive
  • Slack-tide window (~30 min either side) is when mantas barrel-feed at cleaning stations
  • Don't wear gloves — bare hands signal "cleaner wrasse visit" and the manta slows
  • Stay 4–6 m horizontal from any manta, never in front, never above
What kills the encounter
  • Sea state > 1.5 m — operators cancel the manta dive outright
  • Visibility under 12 m — cleanings stations don't attract at the right light
  • Cyclone-season Dec–Apr at Kadavu / Taveuni (operators close)
  • Full-moon spring tides — current rips through Somosomo Strait on the flood

How to read this grid

Likelihood bands are derived from three overlapping evidence streams: Aqua-Trek Fiji & Beqa Lagoon Resort operator briefings (2024–2026 published sighting calendars), Tourism Fiji dive-season climatology (plankton-bloom cycles and water-temperature windows), and operator-reported historical manta-ID databases for the Somosomo Strait (Dolphin Bay Divers, Paradise Cove) and Astrolabe (Mad Fish Dive). Numbers are not a guarantee — they reflect "any given dive day" sighting probability at the right site in the right month under the right conditions.

Resident mantas (M. alfredi) stay on a reef year-round but are smaller (3–4 m wingspan) and shy. Seasonal giants (M. birostris, 5–7 m) follow plankton pulses in the cool months — May through September at Yasawa, Taveuni and Coral Coast. Beqa Lagoon holds a small alfredi population around Frigates Passage and the outer barrier; you'll see them but they will not "fly" close to divers.

Pick Either if you only have one week in Fiji and want the best odds of seeing any manta. Pick Resident if you'd rather have multiple close, repeatable encounters with the same reef population (good for photography). Pick Seasonal if you specifically want the big birostris — the calendar window is narrower but the spectacle is bigger.

FAQ

Can I snorkel with mantas or do I need scuba?

Both work at Yasawa (Drawaqa cleaning station, 5–10 m) and Beqa Lagoon (8–12 m over the barrier). At Kadavu Astrolabe and Somosomo Strait the cleaning stations sit 18–25 m — scuba is needed. Snorkelers should be comfortable swimming 200 m against a mild drift in a current-line.

Are Fiji mantas the same species as Maldives?

Both regions host M. alfredi (resident reef manta). The Maldives has a unique M. birostris aggregation at Hanifaru Bay — that aggregation doesn't exist in Fiji. Fiji's birostris encounters are chance plankton pulses, not a single mega-aggregation. If your benchmark is "Hanifaru-style", manage expectations.

Is there a manta-ID database?

Yes — Manta Trust Fiji catalogues individuals by ventral-spot pattern. Operators in Taveuni and Kadavu upload IDs. Bring an underwater camera with a wide lens (no strobes — strobes scare mantas) and submit your shots at mantatrust.org after the trip.

What if I get sea-sick on the live-aboard?

Most Yasawa and Taveuni manta dives are day-boats from a resort base, not live-aboard. If you're worried, pick Beqa Lagoon (sheltered, 20-min crossing) over Somosomo Strait (3–4 h open-water crossing). Stemetil the night before + ginger tablets work for most.
