How to read this
Fiji's calendar is a three-track mix. The national track is fixed: New Year, Fiji Day (10 Oct), Constitution Day, Diwali (Oct/Nov), Christmas. The religious track is mostly lunar: Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr shift back ~10 days each year, Diwali shifts by a week, Holi by a few days, and Easter moves through March–April. The cultural track is local: Hibiscus Festival (Suva, August), Bula Festival (Nadi, July), Sugar Festival (Lautoka, September), provincial iTaukei ceremonies that happen roughly monthly.
A few non-obvious collisions: Fiji Day (Oct 10–12) is a public holiday but most resorts stay open — it's mostly a flag-raising, parade, and civic celebration in Suva. Diwali is a public holiday; some tour operators close for the day, but the Suva celebrations are worth staying for. Ramadan affects food service in Muslim-majority areas (parts of Suva, Lautoka) — restaurants may be closed during daylight hours; this is the clearest "avoid" flag for travellers who want a normal resort experience.
Cyclone season overlap is its own beast. The official season is November through April, with peak activity January to March. A festival date set in late November (e.g. Diwali, Prophet Mohammed's birthday) can collide with a tropical low passing through, and the festival may be postponed by 24 hours. The orange "cyclone-exposure" flag captures this: any month from Nov to Apr is flagged in the grid.
"Avoid religious" tolerance hides Eid, Ramadan end, Holi and Diwali. If you select "love religious" they become highlights instead. Crowds spike on the national days and the bigger cultural events — if you want a quiet resort, your day-of-the-week row should be empty for the chosen month.
Limits
- Religious dates here are typical 2024–2026 ranges. Lunar calendars drift — always re-check with the Fiji Muslim League or a current-year public-holiday calendar before booking.
- Provincial iTaukei ceremonies are village-level events. Some are private; some are open. Asking the local tourist office (e.g. Tourism Fiji Nausori or Suva) is the only reliable way to know what's open during your dates.
- Cyclone season is a probabilistic overlay, not a hard cancellation. Most Nov–Apr weeks are fine; some are not.
- School holiday dates shift year to year. The April and December school break weeks can spike domestic-tourist demand.
- This tool doesn't show specific event venues or parade routes — that's a city-by-city check.
- "Avoid" flags are warnings, not moral judgements. If you've booked to attend Diwali or Eid, ignore the warning.
FAQ
Is Diwali a public holiday in Fiji?
Yes — it's a national public holiday, normally in late October or early November (lunar, so it shifts). Many tour operators close for the day; restaurants and resorts stay open. The Suva celebrations are the largest outside India.
When is the Bula Festival?
Nadi's Bula Festival typically runs the third or fourth week of July (often coinciding with the Prophet Mohammed's birthday week). It's a week of carnival, music, parades and food stalls. Resorts in the Nadi / Denarau corridor book out.
Is it rude to visit during Ramadan?
No, but be respectful. Don't eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours in Muslim-majority areas. Restaurants that cater primarily to Muslim clientele may be closed during the day; western-oriented resorts are unaffected.
Is Fiji Day (Oct 10) a big deal?
It's a public holiday with a parade in Suva and small ceremonies nationwide. Resorts operate normally. If you're in Suva on Oct 10, watch from Albert Park — it's a colourful two-hour parade.
What's the quietest month for a beach trip?
Mid-September to mid-October, after the Hibiscus / Bula / Sugar rush. Crowds are thin, weather is dry, and most festivals are out of the way. Avoid the week of Fiji Day (Oct 10) and the school holidays.
