Packet recommendation
How to read this
Three operators, three fleets. South Sea Cruises runs the Bula catamaran from Denarau, calling at Treasure Island, Beachcomber, Mana, Malolo and Lomani on the Mamanuca line, and at the southern Yasawa resorts on the Yasawa line. The Yasawa legs take 2–4 hours each way. They sell the most packets of any operator.
Awesome Adventures is Yasawa-only — they don't run to the Mamanucas at all. Their strength is the Captain Cook packet (3-island Bula Combo), which is the cheapest 5-day Yasawa loop. Their cat is older and slower than South Sea's.
Yasawa Flyer is the newest and fastest, a 26-metre cat built in 2019 that reaches the far Yasawa chain (Tavewa, Matacawa Levu, Nanuya Balavu) without changing vessels. Their packets are 4-, 7- and 10-day combos and are 15–25% more expensive than Awesome Adventures but the journey is smoother and the timetable more frequent.
Packet logic: operators sell in "Magic" / "Mamanuca Combo" / "Yasawa Combo" structures. A packet is locked to that carrier; you cannot mix a South Sea Mamanuca leg with an Awesome Yasawa leg without paying two single-leg fares, not a packet. The calculator flags this and suggests a single operator.
Sea state matters. The open ocean west of Denarau can run 2 m swells in the June–September trade-wind window — boats still run, but Yasawa passengers report symptoms in 30–40% of cases. Stinger-season (Oct–May) adds a no-swim rule at outer reef stops.
What this is NOT
- Not real-time. Departures, capacity and packet availability change daily; confirm with the operator the morning of.
- Not a booking tool. Book at southseacruises.com, awesomefiji.com, or yasawaflyer.com.fj. Phone bookings attract a FJD 25 agent fee.
- Not for Kadavu or Lau. Those islands are reached by small-plane charter, not catamaran.
- Not a guarantee of weather routing. Operators sometimes divert to calmer resorts if Yasawa is rough.
- Not including resort levies. Most Yasawa resorts add FJD 30-50 per adult per night for meals and activities not in the packet — read the fine print.
FAQ
What's the luggage weight class on each operator?
25 kg per person across all three. Anything more is FJD 5/kg on the spot, by the captain's discretion. Hard suitcases are accepted; surfboards and dive gear are oversized and require prior notice.
Can I take a catamaran to Beqa?
No. Beqa Lagoon is reached by small boat from Pacific Harbour (45 min), or by seaplane (Turtle Airways). The Denarau cats do not serve Beqa.
Are packets transferable if I miss the boat?
No. South Sea Cruises will let you rebook once at no charge (same packet, same carrier); a second no-show forfeits the leg. Awesome Adventures offer one rebook; Yasawa Flyer is the strictest — a missed departure is forfeit.
How rough does it have to get to cancel?
Operators cancel at sustained 3 m swells (rare, only in tropical-storm conditions). At 2 m the catamarans still run but most passengers feel queasy — bring ginger chews and a sleeve of pressure-point wristbands.
Do kids under 5 sail free?
Under-2 in lap: free. Ages 2–11: child fare, roughly 50–60% of adult. Child price depends on packet; some age-and-grade schools cut to 30%.
