Domestic Flight Picker — Fiji Airways vs Northern vs Turtle

Three carriers fly the smaller islands: Fiji Airways (turboprop), Northern Air (smaller turboprop, lighter baggage), and Turtle Airways (seaplane). Pick origin, destination and bag weight, and we'll price all three in FJD with peak-season logic.

How to read this

Three operators, three aircraft, three bag rules. Fiji Airways flies the ATR72-500 turboprop (50 seats) from Nadi to Savusavu, Taveuni, Labasa and Koro. Bag allowance is 20 kg per person. Their published one-way fares are the headline price: Nadi–Savusavu ≈ FJD 380, Nadi–Taveuni ≈ FJD 420, Suva–Taveuni ≈ FJD 350. Peak season adds 15%.

Northern Air flies the smaller ATR42 (around 15–20% cheaper) from Nadi to Labasa and sometimes Savusavu, but only takes 15 kg of checked luggage per person. They are also the most likely to bump you to a later flight on a weather day. Their slot for Beqa and Koro is limited — they only land when the weather is good.

Turtle Airways runs the de Havilland Twin Otter as a seaplane. The 9-seat Otter lands on water. It is the only practical way to get to Beqa Island (no airstrip) and is a common Koro Island option. Seaplane prices are roughly 2× the equivalent Fiji Airways turboprop leg because the aircraft is smaller, slower, and burns more fuel per seat. Weight limit per passenger is 90 kg dressed. Baggage allowance is 25 kg soft-sided only.

Peak season math: the published rate card applies 15% uplift between 18 December and 22 January, and again for the Australian school holidays in early July through mid-August. The calculator applies that uplift only to the carrier base fare, not to baggage excess.

Weather diversions are common between December and April — the wet-season window. The Suva Nausori corridor is the most likely to be grounded at low cloud. Build a buffer day into your itinerary if you have a same-day international connection.

FAQ

Why is the seaplane so much more expensive?

The de Havilland Twin Otter carries 9 passengers, burns more fuel per seat than the ATR72, and is a charter-priced aircraft. The convenience is real: Beqa has no airstrip, so a turbrop lands you at Pacific Harbour and a boat transfer follows. A Twin Otter puts you on the resort's lagoon.

Can I take a 30 kg checked bag on Fiji Airways?

Yes — 20 kg is included, and excess is sold in 5 kg blocks at ~FJD 12–18 per block. The calculator flags you as overweight but does not price the excess.

What's the best month to fly domestic for weather?

May, June, September and October — outside cyclone season and outside Australian school holidays. Diversion rates are below 4% in those months vs 12–18% in December–March.

Does a child under 2 fly free?

Yes on Fiji Airways and Northern Air (lap-infant, no seat). On Turtle Airways, lap infants are FJD 25–50. Booster seats are full fare.

What if my flight gets cancelled?

Fiji Airways rebooks on the next available flight at no charge. Northern Air offers a refund or rebook. Turtle Airways (seaplane) is weather-driven — most diversions are paid rebookings or a partial refund; read the published Conditions of Carriage.
